Insurance Coverage

Insurance policies in Illinois do not always include acupuncture. Most HMOs have no acupuncture coverage and Medicaid does not cover acupuncture. As of yet, most city of Chicago workers (CTY prefix on the insurance card identification number) have no acupuncture benefits. It’s important to check your benefits before assuming that you will have acupuncture covered. We do not currently accept Medicare as licensed acupuncturists were only recently recognized as able to bill directly for services.

If your insurance doesn’t include acupuncture coverage, please note that you can use HSA/FSA funds for acupuncture with any of our acupuncturists.

For patients with BCBS PPO policies which have acupuncture coverage, in-network practitioners can bill BCBS directly. Check out the “meet our team” link to find out which Bluebird practitioners are in-network with BCBS PPO and currently accepting new patients. If you see any of our other practitioners for acupuncture, they are out of network and can provide you with a superbill for their services after you pay for your session in clinic.

If you have a BCBS PPO insurance plan, please start by confirming your plan covers acupuncture by calling the customer service phone number on the back of your insurance card.

  • If you do have acupuncture benefits, please fill out the BCBS verification form below and we will send this to our billing partner to obtain the full verification and explanation of benefits.

  • OR email bluebirdwell@gmail.com with a copy of the Front and Back of the Insurance Card and Patient’s Date of Birth. Or have us scan a copy for you when you are in the clinic.

It can sometimes take up to one week to fully confirm benefits, so please give enough time to confirm benefits before using insurance for an appointment. Once we have confirmed your benefits, we will contact you (via phone, email or in person at your appointment) to review your benefit coverage. Until benefits are verified, patients will need to pay out of pocket for services.

If you do have acupuncture benefits, the price you pay will be determined by your insurance plan. Exact prices will be determined when we have confirmed your specific benefits. If you have not met your deductible, prices for insurance treatments may be more expensive than our usual cash rate until your deductible is met. If you have further questions about your situation, please call us at 773-234-3742.

If you have insurance coverage through acupuncture with a different insurer:

If you have insurance through a different insurance company, all Bluebird acupuncturists are out of network and can supply you with a superbill which you may submit to your insurance after paying for your appointment. Once you meet your out of network deductible you may get some money reimbursed. It is important to note that the out of network deductible is a much higher threshold to meet than in network. You can contact your insurance company for more information about coverage and reimbursements.

We also do have a few acupuncturists who see patients through the Veteran Administration Community Care program. Acupuncturists who are in the Community Care network with the VA and currently accepting new patients: Thom Heil. Please note that you must have a referral from the VA to set up this appointment.
